There are many implications of what can be considered a laser weapon. For example, a Dazzler is a low frequency laser used to temporarily blind or disorient a person. For this Website, I'll be focusing on the DEW, or directed energy weapons. To date, a directed energy weapon system has not been used actively in combat.
DEWs come with many restrictions, as their targeting system can attack with line of sight. Weather conditions also restrict the use of these defense systems. This is because since the weapon needs a consitent line of sight on it's target, it can malfunction and be unable to destroy incoming projectiles.
But recent developments show promise, as the UUS Portland has been fitted with a destructive laser. It can destroy small boats, unmaned-aerial vehicles, and aircrafts. This is the first of it's kind and is beleived to be a 150 kw laser. It is beleived that amphibous assault vehicles are going to be fitted with this new technology, do to it's power and space.
